South Korea — the land of bibimbap and kimchi, the country that is rich in art, culture, and design that I've always dreamt of exploring. The dream came true when Jay Shogo and Dorami contacted me to be a part of SAAF ( Street Art Award Festival ) 2017. SAAF is a 4-day festival celebrating art and music held in D-Cube City, not far from Sindorim Station and a large shopping mall with many stores and restaurants.

Arriving in Kuala Lumpur from Jakarta around 1 am, I rushed to hail a cab and headed straight home to repack my luggage as my flight to Seoul was at 8 am. I was greeted by Jeffrey, a cool guy with fluent English, at Incheon Airport. He was very hospitable and informed me of my schedule for the next few days. A moment later, Nate Dee arrived from Miami. Heading from Incheon Airport to Seoul, I was taken aback by the city's infrastructure, so many bridges linking district to district. Upon arriving our hotel, I finally meet Jay Shogo and Dorami outside the hotel, where they just finished their smoke break. We have about half an hour to settle in and have dinner with rest of the Pollution crew. The first dinner was hosted by Mr. Choy, the president of Pollution as well as Shop 1029. We were introduced to Korean cuisine and alcohols; Korean beer and soju.

The next day, Jay Shogo, Nate, OP, and I got together and had a relaxed briefing about what we needed do. Then we headed to Hongdae district to get necessary art materials in town. I was shocked to find that the spray paints cost double compared to Kuala Lumpur. Time goes quickly, and a moment later we arrived at the festival venue. It was really urban and right next to a giant mall.

The first day was kind of chill. Nate and I had fun painting helium balloons and some yoga balls while OP painted his large canvas and Jay was painted a BMW. The next day was our true showdown! We were briefed to incorporate the Pollution logo - a Minotaur with our styles and I decided to go crazy with the colours and create a street-style version of Mino. I was pleased with the outcome. Plus, I got to enjoy the music from the big stage although I didn't understand a word. As soon as we finished our dinner, OP brought me to Hongdae to explore and hunt for thrift stores.

For the next two days, the graffiti was to be related to PyongChang 2018 Winter Olympics. My wall was designed with mini canvases that are intended to be auctioned for charity purposes. On the first day, I was having a great time spraying the background with different shades and creating the overall mood of a winter scene. I did as much as I could for the first day so that I could take my time on the second day. On the last night, Artime Joe invited me to hang out with him at Itaewon district for his friend's birthday party. We had fun and it's always good to meet new people and make new friends!

Seoul is definitely a city to visit again because there are still lots of places to explore and more artists' studio to visit. If you ever visit, be sure to plan ahead and download the Google Translate app as the people are not fluent in English at all! But people are kind enough to help if you're having trouble finding your way around. Good luck and have fun in South Korea!

비빔밥과 김치의 땅인 한국은 제가 항상 탐험하길 꿈꿨던 예술, 문화, 디자인이 풍부한 국가입니다. 제 꿈은 제이 쇼고(Jay Shogo)와 도라미(Dorami)가 저에게 SAAF (길거리 예술 어워드 페스티벌)에 참여하라고 연락했을 때 이루어졌습니다. SAAF는 D 큐브 시티에서 개최한 예술과 음악을 기념하는 4일간의 축제입니다. 이곳은 신도림역에서 멀지 않은 곳에 있으며 많은 상점 및 레스토랑과 대형 쇼핑몰이 있습니다.

저는 자카르타에서 출발하여 쿠알라룸푸르에 약 새벽 1시 정도에 도착하였습니다. 서울행 비행기가 오전 8시에 있어서, 제 짐을 다시 챙기기 위해 택시를 불러서 집으로 직행했습니다. 인천 공항에 도착하자, 유창하게 영어를 하는 멋진 남자 제프리(Jeffrey)가 저를 환영해주었습니다. 그는 굉장히 친절했고 다음 날의 제 일정까지 알려주었습니다. 잠시 후에, 마이애미에서 출발한 네이트 디(Nate Dee)가 도착하였습니다. 인천 공항에서 서울까지 가는 길에, 시의 인프라에 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 지역과 지역을 연결해주는 다리가 아주 많았습니다. 잠시 후 호텔에 도착하였고 흡연 시간을 마친 제이 쇼고(Jay Shogo)와 도라미(Dorami)를 마침내 호텔 밖에서 만나게 되었습니다. 우리는 다른 폴루션(Pollution) 직원들과 함께 약 삼십 분간 저녁 식사 시간을 가졌습니다. 첫 식사는 폴루션(Pollution) 및 샵 1029(Shop 1029)의 대표인 최 씨가 진행하였습니다. 우리는 한국 음식과 맥주 및 소주를 소개받았습니다.

다음 날, 제이 쇼고(Jay Shogo)와 네이트(Nate), OP 그리고 저는 우리가 해야 하는 것에 관하여 편안하게 브리핑하는 시간을 보냈습니다. 그리고 홍대에 가서 도심지에 필요한 미술 제품을 구하기로 했습니다. 스프레이 페인트의 가격이 쿠알라룸푸르의 두 배여서 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 시간은 빨리 흘러갔고. 잠시 후 우리는 행사 장소에 도착하게 되었습니다. 행사 장소는 거대한 쇼핑몰 옆에 있는 도심지에 있었습니다.

첫날은 좀 간단하게 보냈습니다. 네이트(Nate)와 저는 즐겁게 헬륨 풍선과 요가 공 몇 개를 칠하였고 OP는 그의 큰 캔버스를 칠했고 제이(Jay)는 BMW를 칠했습니다. 다음 날은 진정한 결전의 날이었습니다! 우리만의 스타일로 미니어처 폴루션(Pollution) 로고를 통합하라는 지시를 받았습니다, 그래서 저는 색상을 열정적으로 사용하여 미노(Mino)의 길거리 스타일 버전을 창작하기로 하였습니다. 그리고 결과물에 만족했습니다. 또한, 가사의 의미는 이해하지 못했어도 큰 무대에서 흘러나오는 음악을 즐길 수 있었습니다. 우리가 저녁 식사를 끝내자마자, OP가 저를 홍대에 데려가 구경시켜주었고 중고품 할인상점을 물색했습니다.

다음 이틀간, 그래피티 주제는 2018 평창 겨울 올림픽과 관련되어 있었습니다. 제 벽은 자선 목적으로 경매될 수 있도록 미니 캔버스로 설계되었습니다. 첫날에, 다양한 색조를 벽에 뿌리며 전반적으로 겨울 장면의 분위기를 만들면서 즐겁게 지냈습니다. 첫날에 할 수 있는 만큼 최선을 다해서 둘째 날에는 저만의 시간을 가질 수 있었습니다. 마지막 날 밤에는 알타임 조(Artime Joe)가 그의 생일 파티에서 함께 시간을 보내기 위해 저를 이태원에 초대해주었습니다. 우리는 즐거운 시간을 보냈습니다. 새로운 사람들과 새로운 친구를 만드는 일은 항상 즐겁습니다!

당연히 서울은 다시 방문하고 싶은 도시입니다. 아직도 서울에서 둘러보아야 하는 장소랑 방문하고 싶은 아티스트의 스튜디오가 많습니다. 이곳에 방문할 계획이시라면, 미리 계획을 짜고 구글 번역기 앱을 다운로드하세요. 아직 한국인들은 영어를 유창하게 하지 못하거든요! 하지만 길을 잃게 되면 한국인들이 친절하게 도와줄 것입니다. 행운을 빕니다. 한국에서 즐거운 시간 보내세요!

"Never Give Up"

Inspired by PyongChang 2018 Winter Olympics Mascots :

SOOHORANG - The white tiger, now the trustworthy mascot for the Olympic Winter Games in 2018, has been long considered Korea’s guardian animal. “Sooho,” meaning protection in Korean, symbolises protection offered to the athletes, spectators and other participants in the 2018 Games. “Rang” comes from the middle letter of “Ho-rang-i,” the Korean word for “Tiger,” and is also the last letter of “Jeong-seon A-ri-rang,” a cherished traditional folk song of Gangwon Province, where the Games will be held.

BANDABI - The Asiatic black bear or “ban-dal-ga-seum-gom” (the bear with a half-moon mark on the chest) symbolises strong willpower and courage in the Korean folklore. This bear now has been selected as a friendly mascot for the Paralympic Games in 2018. “Banda” is derived from “ban-dal,” the Korean word for the half-moon. “Bi” stands for celebration of the Games.
